CHAPTER 10

Icringed when I saw how the council chambers had transformed into a chaotic battleground as Miletus and his troops burst in. Lucinda and Caton would no doubt blame this on us. My only solace was that there was no way he could have followed us here. The magic of Greyson’s portal system prohibited any kind of magical tracking. It had to or the council would be in danger. And it wasn’t as bad as the time Ayesha, the previous fae representative, had blown up the building and tainted the ley line juncture, making it impossible to keep the headquarters where it had been.

A fist flying toward my face broke through the worries I shouldn’t even be considering. Kicking out, I sent the Milen sailing through the air. The clashing of weapons and the crackling of dark magic echoed off the walls like thunder in a storm, but I didn’t get to hear the satisfying thud as the Milen slammed into the wall.

Spinning around, my stomach roiled when I caught the malevolent smirk twisting Miletus’ features. As always, he led the charge with an air of arrogant confidence that made me want to stomp him into the ground. His eyes were ablaze with malice as he surveyed the chaos he had wrought. Behind him, his minions moved with calculated precision, their movements like a deadly dance as they closed in on us with chilling efficiency.

As the first wave of attackers started to fall, my adrenaline flooded my veins. I was just hitting my stride. My senses sharpened as I braced myself for the inevitable clash. This was no mere skirmish. They’d invaded a sacred location that the average supernatural shouldn’t have been able to enter. It was bad enough that they’d attacked Black Bounty, but this was something else entirely. And I would bet anything they were only able to do this because of the help from the Shadow Weavers. This was a battle for the very soul of our world. This was Miletus telling us that none of us were safe. And I would be damned if I let Miletus and his minions trample over everything we held dear.

Amidst the chaos, I caught sight of Lucinda. I expected to see her spitting nails to see the enemy invading her dominion. What I saw was her normally unyielding demeanor faltering in the face of danger. She stumbled backward, a cry of pain escaping her lips as she clutched her arm to her chest. Blood dripped between her fingers and down from her shoulder. Without hesitation, I rushed to her side. I didn’t like the witch, but I couldn’t let her become Milen food.

My heart was pounding with a mixture of fear and determination. “Lucinda, we need to get you out of here,” I urged as I tried to coax her into moving.
